International Affairs and Trade adds new staff member
Jose “Joe” A. Somoza has joined the Office of International Affairs and Trade (City Manager’s Office) as the administrative officer/manager of the Kansas City-Mexico Business Development program. Somoza’s duties will focus on managing Kansas City’s substantive trade program with Mexico.
“We believe that Jose is the right person at the right time for this exciting job. He has the experience, background and drive to takeKansas City’s Mexico Trade agenda to the next level,” said City Manager, Wayne A. Cauthen.
Somoza is currently the managing director/CEO of SOMCO Distribution, LLC. He has more than 20 years of international business management experience and has an extensive network of business contacts in Mexico and Latin America.
Somoza’s background includes working with international businesses in emerging markets and he has expertise in project management, sales and marketing. In addition to his work with corporations, he has worked with governments, nonprofit organizations and in the product/service areas of transportation, food processing, steel, consumer electronics, software, oil and mining.
With a strategic focus on global trade, Kansas City has built an extensive international portfolio and established a robust Mexicoagenda over the last three years. Somoza will focus on shoring up existing business and increasing services while developing plans to lead the Mexico program in new directions.
“As Kansas City continues to develop its international outreach, it can successfully expand its business effectiveness with programs like the one the city has built with Mexico. In tandem with this, additional developing projects such as the International Freight Gateway at Richard’s Gebaur, will serve to enhance Kansas City’s goal to be recognized as a transportation and logistics hub at the crossroads of the global marketplace,” Cauthen said.
“With Joe Somoza on board as the new Mexico manager, Kansas City will become even more visible as it continues to build its reputation and expand its international business commitment to help small and mid-sized companies go global,” Cauthen said.
